Pro-Palestinian Protesters Hijack Harris’ Michigan Rally. The incident underscored how the war in Gaza remains a major issue for Michigan voters.
President Kamala Harris was hampered by several pro-Palestinian protesters during her speech. At a rally in an airport hangar Wednesday night, she was forced to repeat a familiar phrase
About halfway through her speech, she could be heard shouting:
“Kamala, Kamala, you can’t hide! We will not vote for genocide.”
Harris is using a clever strategy, much like Joe Biden did, to give protesters a voice.
“I’m here because we believe in democracy. Every voice matters,” she said. “But I’m speaking now. I’m speaking now.”
The “I’m speaking now” phrase was previously used in a cross-talk during a vice presidential debate during the 2020 election cycle.
As time went on, Harris’s voice changed, becoming more strident.
“You know what? If you want Donald Trump to win, say it. Otherwise, I’m speaking,” Harris said. But the crowd of several thousand people tried to help her. They shouted “Kamala” in an attempt to drown out the protests.
Campaign workers soon escorted the protesters out of the hall.
Will Michigan voters support Harris?
This is the first time she has done so since she replaced Biden at the top of the Democratic ticket. It was telling. It became clear that the war in Gaza remains an important issue for Michigan voters. This is home to the largest concentration of Arab Americans in the country.
“Michigan voters want to support you, but we need policies that save lives in Gaza right now. I meet with community members in Michigan every day who are losing tens and hundreds of family members in Gaza. We need an arms embargo right now,” said Leila Elabed, co-founder of Uncommitted.
It wasn’t the only incident that forced the event to be cut short. Earlier, several attendees had fallen ill due to the heat. Both Harris and Walz were forced to pause their speeches so that doctors could treat attendees.
Walz’s Politics
Walz laid out some of his major policy positions. He outlined his stance on reproductive rights. Walz suggested that the government shouldn’t be in the same exam room with women and their doctors. He also recounted his own family’s experiences with IVF, including failed procedures.
“I still feel that pain,” Walz said.
On gun violence, he took a similarly direct approach: “Our children should be able to go to school freely without fear of being shot in the classroom.”
Walz also went on to call his Republican opponents “weirdos,” as other Democrats have done.
“We’re asking for health care and child care. We are asking for education. We’re asking for safety on our streets.”
