Apple has announced a groundbreaking addition to its AirPods lineup: a new version of the AirPods Pro equipped with built-in hearing aids. This innovative feature aims to assist the over 1 billion people globally who experience hearing loss, as reported by the World Health Organization.
A Game-Changer for Hearing Assistance
In a move that expands the accessibility of hearing aids, Apple’s latest AirPods Pro will incorporate technology designed to support users with mild to moderate hearing loss. The new feature functions as an over-the-counter hearing aid, allowing users to receive real-time adjustments to their hearing experience. This development represents a significant shift in how hearing assistance is delivered, providing users with a more seamless and integrated solution.
Users will be able to take a hearing test using their iPhones or iPads running iOS 18. The test, which takes approximately five minutes, will provide personalized results and audiograms, stored securely within the Health app. Based on these results, the AirPods Pro will make dynamic adjustments to sound levels, optimizing the listening experience in various environments. This includes enhancing conversation clarity and improving overall engagement with surroundings.
The new AirPods Pro will not only tailor sound adjustments for conversations and environmental awareness but also apply these settings to any media the user is listening to. This feature ensures that phone calls, music, and other audio are experienced at optimized levels, providing a richer and more accessible auditory experience.
Noise Reduction and Hearing Protection
In addition to hearing aid functionality, the upgraded AirPods Pro will include a passive noise-reduction feature. This component is designed to dampen loud ambient noises while preserving audio quality, which can be particularly useful in noisy environments such as live concerts.
Sarah Herrlinger, Apple’s Senior Director of Global Accessibility Policy and Initiatives, highlighted the company’s commitment to inclusivity: “For decades, Apple has led the way in designing products for everyone and supporting users with a broad spectrum of hearing abilities.” She emphasized that these new features will drive awareness around hearing health and offer customizable tools for users to remain connected.
New Apple Watch Features for Sleep Apnea Detection
In addition to the AirPods Pro updates, Apple has also announced new features for the Apple Watch. The upcoming update will introduce a “Breathing Disturbances” metric designed to detect sleep apnea. This feature is expected to roll out later this month, pending approval from global health authorities such as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
By integrating hearing aid technology into its popular AirPods Pro and expanding health monitoring capabilities on the Apple Watch, Company continues to push the boundaries of accessible and personalized technology.
