Kamala Harris, “The American People Deserve Better”

After an interview with former President Donald Trump, Vice President Kamala Harris said “the American people deserve better.” At the annual convention of the National Association of Black Journalists, Trump disrespected her by making a racial statement.

“It was the same old show — divisive and disrespectful,” Harris said Wednesday night in Houston.

“The American people deserve a leader who tells the truth, a leader who does not respond with hostility and anger when confronted with the facts. We deserve a leader who understands that our differences do not divide us. They are an essential source of our strength,” Harris said.

Trump’s comments on Kamala Harris

Trump had previously questioned Harris’s race. In an interview with NABJ in Chicago, he said the presidential candidate was half black and half Indian-American.

“I didn’t know she was Black until a number of years ago when she happened to turn Black, and now she wants to be known as Black,” Trump said of Harris. “Is she Indian or is she Black? Because she was Indian all the way and then all of a sudden she made a turn and she went she became a Black person.”

Harris’s father is Jamaican and her mother is Indian. She attended Howard University, a historically black college. She is the first female vice president in U.S. history. As well as the first black woman to hold the office.

Trump’s comments came after President Joe Biden dropped out of the race on July 21. The Trump campaign launched an aggressive attack on Harris, questioning her racial identity.

“Crazy Kamala is saying she’s Indian, not Black. This is a big deal. Stone cold phony. She uses everybody, including her racial identity!” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social.

Later at a campaign rally in Harrisburg, Trump accused Harris of adopting a “new Southern accent” after she spoke at a campaign event in Atlanta.

On the big screen above Trump’s stage was a photo of a smiling Harris. There was with the caption: “Kamala Harris of California becomes the first Indian-American senator in the United States.”

Trump’s vice president, Sen. J.D. Vance of Ohio, said in a speech Wednesday in Arizona: “Kamala Harris is a phony who caters to whatever audience is in front of her.”

Not the First

This isn’t the first time Trump’s allies have focused on Harris’s racial identity. The same was said about Harris in 2019, when she was a Democratic presidential candidate.

“The hostility that Donald Trump displayed on stage today is the same hostility that he has displayed throughout his life, throughout his term in office, and throughout his campaign for president,” Michael Tyler said.

“Donald Trump has already proven that he can’t unite America, so he’s trying to divide us,” Tyler said.
