Plane : Paying Tribute To The 61 Victims

A passenger plane belonging to Voepass Airlines crashed near the Brazilian city of Sao Paulo. According to the airline, there were 61 people on board. Local authorities reported that none of the passengers or crew members survived.

According to the airline, there were 62 people on board the twin-engine turboprop ATR 72. Of these, 58 were passengers and four were crew members. The number of people on board was later clarified. One of the people who bought a ticket was late for the flight. This was reported by Reuters, citing local media. They were the ones who contacted the latecomer.

Later, the mayor’s office of Valinhos reported no survivors in the crash.

The plane was flying from Cascavel (Paraná state, near the border with Paraguay and Argentina) to Guarulhos airport.

A video appeared on social media showing the plane falling vertically, entering a tailspin. It crashed in the middle of a residential area, but no one on the ground was hurt.

Brazilian television channel GloboNews showed smoking debris and a fire that engulfed a large area. Police and firefighters are working at the scene.

Why the plane crashed

According to Flightradar24, the plane was built in 2010. Brazil’s National Civil Aviation Agency later confirmed this information. According to it, the plane was in good working order.

The local air accident investigation service Cenipa said it had no information yet about the cause of the crash. According to the service, the crew did not report any problems to ground services immediately before the plane crashed.

It took off from Cascavel at 11:46 local time (14:46 GMT). Starting at 13:21, it stopped responding to messages from Sao Paulo airport controllers. Within a minute, it disappeared from radar screens, the Brazilian Air Force command reported.

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva called a minute of silence at the event where he was speaking when news of the tragedy broke.

“Very sad,” he wrote on social media. “All my solidarity with the families and friends of the victims.”

He later declared a three-day national mourning for the victims.
