At a Vietnamese restaurant in Falls Church, Virginia, Trump aired his frustrations. He said:
“When I looked at the hostility of that, I said, ‘Why am I doing it? Let’s do it with another network.’ I want to do it”
He mentioned a preference for debates on NBC, CBS, Fox News, or even CNN, saying he believes those networks will offer a more balanced platform.
Trump’s Concerns
Trump’s concerns extend to debate rules. He criticized ABC for wanting to change the rules, specifically around whether microphones should be “hot” (live) or muted. Trump has expressed a desire to stick to the rules used in the previous debates. Back then, microphones were muted to prevent interruptions. However, he has also indicated that he could accept live microphones if needed.
Harris’ campaign has requested live microphones throughout the debate. This will ensure that viewers can hear everything both candidates are saying, no matter who is speaking. The request is intended to ensure a transparent and unfiltered debate experience. They argue that Trump’s push to mute the microphones is an attempt to limit Harris’s ability to respond effectively and deal with interruptions.
Negotiations over the debate format have been difficult. Harris’ team has also proposed allowing the candidates to sit in on the debate and use notes. The Trump campaign has rejected these proposals. Trump campaign spokesman Jason Miller has accused the Harris campaign of seeking additional benefits to compensate for Harris’s performance, which he says is inadequate.
Trump Criticism
Trump’s criticism of ABC News has intensified following a recent social media post in which he questioned the fairness of the network’s debates. He implied that ABC’s coverage was biased and expressed a strong preference for another network. NBC News has expressed interest in potentially hosting the debate, but no official decisions have been made. Representatives for ABC, CNN, and CBS did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
The Sept. 10 debate was originally scheduled before President Biden dropped out of the race. After Biden’s withdrawal, Kamala Harris became the Democratic nominee.
Former President initially proposed hosting the debate on Fox News, but ultimately agreed to hold it on ABC. This election cycle marks the first time since 1987 that the Commission on Presidential Debates does not oversee the debates, following the withdrawal of the Republican National Committee in 2022 and the Biden campaign’s objections to the commission’s format and rules.
