The Polaris Dawn Mission
The Polaris Dawn mission has several important goals. One of its key features is a planned spacewalk on the third day of the mission. Unlike previous spacewalks, which were conducted by astronauts from government space agencies, this spacewalk will involve civilians.
The Crew Dragon capsule will be depressurized to expose the crew to the vacuum of space, as it does not have a pressurized airlock.
The mission is also scheduled to reach an altitude of up to 870 miles above Earth, well above the orbit of the International Space Station. This trajectory will take the spacecraft through the inner regions of the Van Allen radiation belts.
This will allow scientists to study the effects of space radiation on both the astronauts and the spacecraft. This research is critical to planning future missions to the Moon and Mars, which will require astronauts to navigate through these radiation zones.
