Trump Would Not Oppose Legalizing Marijuana. But He Is Also Calling for Restrictions on Public Use.
In a recent TruthSocial post, former President Donald Trump expressed his support for the upcoming Florida ballot measure to legalize marijuana. Trump expects the measure, which would allow adults to use the drug recreationally, to pass. However, he stressed the need for the state legislature to pass regulations to prevent its use in public places.
Trump wrote,
“In Florida, like many other states that have already approved it, personal marijuana will be legalized for adults under Amendment 3.”
He added,
“Whether people like it or not, it will happen by voter approval, so it needs to be done right. We need the state legislature to responsibly create laws to prohibit its use in public places to avoid the pervasive smell of marijuana that can be found in many Democrat-run cities.”
Trump ‘s Position
Aligning his stance with the Make America Safe Again agenda, former President has railed against criminalizing marijuana, saying it would be a waste of taxpayer money to arrest minors for possession. He said,
“No one should have to mourn the loss of a loved one who died from fentanyl-laced marijuana. We will Make America SAFE Again!”
If passed, the proposed measure would allow adults 21 and older to possess, purchase, or use marijuana products and paraphernalia for personal, non-medical use. The state Supreme Court ruled in April that the measure would be on the 2024 ballot.
Trump’s post comes amid recent controversy over his stance on another Florida ballot measure related to abortion rights. Florida currently has a six-week abortion ban, a restriction former President has criticized. He said it was “too short,” arguing for a longer term. His comments were met with backlash from the abortion rights movement, with leaders like Marjorie Dannenfelser of Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America raising concerns about his stance. In response, former President clarified that he would vote against the abortion rights amendment, which would allow abortions after the current six-week limit.
Trump’s shifting positions on these ballot measures highlight the complexity of his policy proposals and their potential impact on voters.
